Biography

  1. Joseph Smith, Plantation Phoeni(x) Park, Pomeroon River, Demerary, was inscribed twice in the family bible of the Smith family from the Broadclyst/Poltimore area of Devon. Another inscription gives James Smith, "departed this lif[e] September the 14 1834". A third inscription, "William an[d] Sarah Surridge was married August 30th 1824" relates to Sarah Smith who married William Surridge in Broadclyst on that date. Sarah appears to have died by the time of the 1841 census when William had remarried and was living in Politmore. Joseph Smith of Plantation Phoenix Park may have been the brother of Sarah. There were at least four children born to Joseph Smith and his wife Ann (probably nee Bear) of Broadclyst: Joseph (baptised 1788), Richard (baptised 1791), James (baptised 1793) and Sarah (baptised 1799). Richard Smith appears in the 1841 census in the household and William and Sarah Surridge, and later with the family of their son William who was born in Broadclyst around 1836.

  2. Smith, Joseph. Died: APR 1841, Pln. Phoenix Park, Pomeroon.
