James Archibald Holmes

Given as J.A. Holmes but almost certainly James Archibald Holmes, awarded the compensation for the enslaved people under three awards in British Guiana.

1. Fiat of bankruptcy issued against James Archibald Holmes formerly of Demerara but at present residing at no. 35 New Broad Street 23/11/1843.

2. For the award for the Fear Not estate, the awardee is given as 'J.H. Holmes' in the Register of Claims but J.A. Holmes in the original claim. To date no sign in the compensation records has been found of the family of the pro-slavery advocate George Frederick Holmes (1820-1897), born Demerara, whose parents are given as Joseph Henry Herndon Holmes and Mary Ann Pemberton Holmes in the catalogue of his papers at Duke University.
