T71/857: claim by Wm Scarlett, owner. Numerous counterclaims including Hamilton Brown as executor of Mary Baillie, lien on 35 enslaved persons; Samuel Richardson of Dulwich, England, judgement creditor for £77 17s 5d.
£660 9s 3d awarded to Hamilton Brown on 22/04/1839; £680 6s 1d to Utten Thomas Todd and Richard James Todd on 02/11/1840. The two Todds were trustees for at least some of William Scarlett (1st part), Elizabeth May Scarlett (2nd part), John William Gaynor of St Anne and William Sheriff Tonge of St Catherine (third part), probably only the latter two.
Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) p. xlvii reported speech of critical negro, no ownership data, quoted as 'He beg Masa to sell [his wife's] time', unclear whether Massa was Wm Scarlett.
