The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:
|
- 1718 [EY] → Owner
|
1718 [SY] - 1733 [LA] → Owner
Inherited Lacovia from his father Joseph Hodges in 1718; by the time he wrote his will in 1733 he owned one moity of it, which he bequeathed to his cousin Captain John Hodges. |
1816 [SY] - 1834 [LA] → Owner
Watt bought Lacovia estate in St Elizabeth from the executors and trustees of Thomas Warren and Thomas Fullerton Warren for £40,000 in 1816 (conveyance dated 25/07/1816). William Gladstone alleged in Parliament in 1838 that Watt had purchased it around 1813 and that 'it stood in his books charged with £115,000.' |
1755 [EA] - 1757 [LA] → Attorney
Under the care and direction of John Morse. |
1755 [EA] - 1768 [EY] → Owner
|
1768 [EA] - 1791 [LA] → Owner
|
1769 [EA] - → Heir
In the will of John Hodges proved in 1769, he left Lacovia to his wife Sarah with the proviso that if his son Thomas took on the estate, he [the son] would pay Sarah £1000 p.a. At some point between 1791 and 1805, the Hodges family appears to have sold Lacovia. It is not clear whether Thomas Fowler nee Hodges ever came into possession of the estate and enslaved people: it was held by his mother in 1791, and did not appear in her will proved in 1799, of which her son Thomas was co-residuary legatee. |
1805 [EA] - 1805 [LA] → Not known
In his will made in 1805 and proved in 1814, the Rev. Thomas Warren of St Elizabeth referred to the Lacovia estate as if he owned it, and bequeathed it to his family. This has been confirmed by the case of Henckell v Davy, heard by the Privy Council in 1828, which showed the estate being sold to Robert Watt for £40,000 in 1816. |
