Jacob Kladen the elder

Kladen was the original purchaser of Lot No. 6 (137 acres) which with Lot No. 7 (65 acres, originally purchased by Poor Settlers) became Petit Bordell. Jacob Kladen the elder in his will left an unnamed estate on St Vincent to Michael White [son of Michael White of Montserrat] as his residuary heir: Michael White appeared in the Slave Registers as the owner of Petit Bordelle and Sharpe's between 1817 and 1834.

Shephard gives Lots no. 6 (137 acres, original purchaser Kladen) and no. 7 (65 acres, original purchaser 'Poor Settlers') as the origin of Petit Bordell and Lot no.18 (42 acres, original purchaser Sharpe) together with smaller lots leased to French inhabitants (part of Lots Nos. 14 and 15, and Lot 17) as the origin of Sharpe's.

In deeds of 1774 and 1775, a group of 16 annuitants each purchased an annuity from Jacob Kladen (q.v.) secured on Kladen's St Vincent property, including named enslaved people, to raise £11,000. The estate is not named in the deed but other evidence (notably (a) the reference in the deed to the estate being bordered by the Petit Bordelle river and (b) the codicil of 13/10/1804 to the will of John Halliday of Taunton St James Somerset [made 1800] proved 22/11/1805 in which he left to Mary Martin Halliday all the arrears of an annuity due from the estate the late John Mills of Nevis and also from 'the estate of Michael White lately Jacob Kladen's on St Vincent') strongly suggests this was Petit Bordelle.

By a series of indentures the latest dated 2 & 3 April 1818, Michael White senior had assigned to D.H. Rucker & Co. the estates to secure three sums of £3780, £5300 and £1228 19s 9d, and agreed to consign the output to Ruckers. On 08/07/1830 the Ruckers, being indebted to William Hodges of London for £7000, deposited the indentures with him as security. Ruckers failed in November 1831 and the assignees with William Hodges launched a suit in St Vincent to foreclose in June 1833, and a receiver was appointed. In 1831 the estates, plus Michael White's other estate Mount Alexander, had been damaged by the hurricane of that year, and White had applied and been granted £3600 for the restoration of the estates. The Chancery case successfully blocked the repayment of White by the loan commissioners.
