Martial Lawrence Welch

Born in the West Indies, but in Britain by at least the early 1820s and probably by 1803, awarded the compensation for 52 enslaved people on Dominica.

1. Born c. 1779. Married Elizabeth Laura Roberts St Mary Ealing 28/10/1803. In 1851 he was a widower living 'landed proprietor' aged 72 at 13 Wyndham Place Bryanston Square with daughters Eliza 40 and Harriet 30 both born Marylebone. In 1861 Martial L Welch was still living at Wyndham Place aged 86 'civil service superannuated', born Dominica West Indies, blind, with two daughters Eliza Ann and Harriet. Other identifiable children were Edward Barre Roberts Welch, Montague Stuart Welch, Frances Anne Laura Welch and Arthur Henry Welsh [sic]. He left less than £100 on his death at Wyndham Place in 1864.

2. In 1823, Martial Laurence [sic] Welch ('I live in Wentworth [sic] Place, Bryanstone Square') , testified at the Old Bailey trial of Jarvis Streeter, a former servant, who was sentenced to 7 years transportation for stealing from Welch.

3. Martial Lawrence Welch served as Auditor of the Medical Invalid and General Insurance Co. (q.v.) at least 1848-1852.
