Thomas Robert Vermont

1803 - 1865

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Awarded with his wife Ann Johnson Vermont (q.v.) the compensation for the Mount Pleasant este in St Mary, and almost certainly the same man as the Thomas R. Vermont who was awarded the compensation under a series of smaller awards in Trelawney. Resident in Jamaica in the 1830s but in Britain by 1851.

  1. In 1851 Thomas R Vermont aged 48 'gentleman, proprietor of houses and land, magistrate on Jamaica', born Martinique, was living in White Hart Lane, Hayes with his wife Ann Johnson Vermont aged 37 born Jamaica and their six children, four of whom aged 9 to 17 were born in Jamaica and two of whom aged 4 and 6 were born in Hayes (implying the family moved to Britain between 1842 and 1845). By 1861, Ann J Vermont 'wife', aged 46 landholder was living at 10 Oxford Terrace Peckham with two sons, implying Thomas Robert Vermont was alive but elsewhere.

  2. In 1855 Thomas Robert Vermont of Hayes Middlesex 'out of business' sought protection from his creditors as an insolvent debtor.

  3. Thomas Robert Vermont, 'a senior resident magistrate of the local parish', built Vermont House in Falmouth Jamaica some time after he purchased the lot in September 1832. The building is now the Falmouth Post Office.
