Rev. Evan James [curate of St Dunstans] Stepney.
Rev. Evan James, born 03/12/1790 Llanbadarn, ordained 1814, appointed lecturer Stepney 13/07/1827. In Llanbadarn Churchyard there is a memorial to Richard James Esq., who died 26/11/1855 aged 60 years and to the memory of his niece Mary Ann, daughter of Rev. Evan James of Stepney who died 07/07/1845 aged 22.
1841 census Evan James clerk aged 50 living at White Horse Lane Stepney with Sarah aged 20 and Mary Ann 18. Sarah Helena was baptised 23/06/1820 at St Dunstan Stepney, Mary Ann was born 03/01/1822 and baptised 04/01/1822 at St Dunstan and All Saints Stepney, in both cases parents were given as Evan and Sarah Ann James. A son to the couple, Thomas was baptised at St Dunstan 16/08/1825.
It has not been possible to date to identify definitively James's wife, in whose right he claimed for one-third of the compensation for the Great Pond estate in Jamaica. However, an Evan James married a Sarah Paisley in 1818 in Chelsea. Given that the estate had belonged to Walter Paisley, this appears highly likely to have been the path to asserted ownership for Rev. Evan James.
Will of Rev. Evan James clerk of St Dunstan Stepney [made 11/1842] proved 05/04/1843. He left his property, including freehold land near Aberystwyth, in trust for his son Thomas Paisley James and daughter Sarah Helena James, with £1000 to support a second daughter Mary Ann.
