Biography

Evelyn Bazalgette (1801-1888), barrister, 4th son of Louis Bazalgette (1750-1830) and Frances Bergman (1769-1847), uncle of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-1891) and younger brother of Louis Bazalgette junior (1792-1879) and Daniel Bazalgette (1793-1838), who were partners in Armstrong & Bazalgette.

  1. Born 20/10/1801 to Louis Bazalgette and his second wife Frances Bergman (1769-1847). Louis made his fortune as tailor to the Prince of Wales in the 1780s and 1790s and then branched out into money-lending and invested in the West India and East India trades. Louis left personalty of £250,000 at his death. Louis's estate was the subject of protracted legal wrangling after his death in 1830 as Evelyn Bazalgette (as executor) attempted to recover the outstanding debts owed his father. Evelyn Bazalgette claimed compensation as a creditor of the estate of Anthony Gilbert Storer (q.v.) in the case of Storer v. Bazalgette, and as mortgagee on Camp Savanna in Bazalgette v Kirlew.

  2. Matriculated Balliol 1818 aged 17, BA 1823; Lincolns Inn 1827; QC and Bencher 1858.

  3. At 9 Old Square, Lincoln's Inn in the 1841 census: age 35, Barrister, living with John Sheffield, 35, also a barrister. At 8 Old Buildings, Lincolns Inn in 1851, age 49, Barrister in practice. At 8 Upper Wimpole Street in 1871, age 68, Barrister out of practice, with Frederick Edwards, 30, Footman, Mary Goodchild, 36, Cook and Matilda Turpin, 30, Housemaid. At 14 Devonshire Place in 1881, age 78, Barrister + Q.C. + M.A. (Oxford) Withdrawn from practice, with George Cliford, 27, Butler, Frances Broadsmith, 30, Cook, Mary Young, 46, Housemaid and Hannah Croll, 18, Kitchenmaid.

  4. Louis Bazalgette bought South Stoneham House in Hampshire in 1804 and sold it in 1809; and bought Eastwick Park house in Great Bookham, Surrey, in 1809, which was sold after his death in 1833.

  5. Will of Evelyn Bazalgette formerly of 8 Upper Wimpole Street but late of Lincolns Inn and 14 Devonshire Place, who died at 14 Devonshire Place 21/07/1888, was proved 28/08/1888: Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (his nephew) was one of the executors. Effects £155,139 7s 3d.
