Biography
Large-scale attorney in Jamaica who owned in his own right a group some 60 enslaved people attached to Hordley.
- Will of Charles Scott on St Thomas-in-the-East [made in 1841] proved 17/11/1843. Among other monetary legacies, he left £100 each to Grace Scott the widow of his brother John Scott and six of John Scott's children (including Mary, wife of George Jamieson; and Helen wife of John Hare (sic: in fact Hair)), all of Scotland, and £150 and £400 respectively to two other sons of John Scott, Charles and Thomas, the latter residing on Duckenfield estate. He left annuities of £6 p.a. each to Eliza Scott of Morant Bay and her two daughters, Mary and Ann. He left two separate sums of £600 in trust for Mary Scott and Margaret Scott, his natural children by Ann Duber [sp?]. He left £40 to the Minister of Sanquhar in Dumfriesshire to be distributed among the poor of the parish. His residuary heir was his natural daughter Ann, the wife of Richard Greaves Marshall (who would not himself accept any legacy, according to the will) for life, and then to her children. In a codicil of 1842 he noted the birth of a son to Ann and Richard Greaves Marshall.
