???? - 18th Nov 1842
Doctor of medicine, baptised in St James, Jamaica, in 1778, son of William Rhodes Bernard and Susanna Bernard, graduated from University of Edinburgh 1801, went to Bristol. Died 18/11/1842. Family memorial in Clifton Church, which describes him as 'of Childernas' [sic].
Complex family genealogy entwined with Judith Bernard (q.v.) and other members of the Bernard family. According to Plarr's, the (unnamed) father of the medical man Ralph Mo[u]ntague Bernard (1816-1871) was the brother of Samuel Edward Bernard, but in fact it seems the two men were first cousins. Ralph Mountague Bernard and his brother James Fogo Bernard were certainly the sons of Charles Edward Bernard and Barbara Fogo, while Samuel Edward Bernard (1800-1885) was the son of David (d. 1805) and Judith Bernard senior, and brother of Judith junior and William Rhodes Bernard (1794-1868). Dr Charles Edward Bernard was also certainly the father of William Rhodes Bernard (1804-1845) and the Charles Edward Bernard who was a merchant of Bristol, the Charles Edward Bernard junior, who was a partner with his brother Walter Craufuird Bernard.
Will of Doctor Charles Edward Bernard Doctor of Medicine of Clifton proved 31/01/1843. Under the will he left his property, including his real estate in the West Indies, in trust for his eight children, to be divided into 'ninth shares', of which two would go to his son William Rhodes Bernard and one each to his other children.
Charles Edward Bernard's daughter Susanna James Bernard, who married Richard Tawney at Clifton 22/09/1836, was the grandmother of the historian R.H. Tawney.
