Biography

Awarded with Henry Kemshead (q.v., under Henry Morris Kemshead) the compensation for 15 enslaved people in Clarendon Jamaica as trustee for Richard Augustus, Jamima and Janet Emma Clare.

  1. "Baptized at Coghill, [17/09/1805] the infant son of Mr and Mrs Lindsay, named William James born on the 13th November last." His parents were Robert Lindsay and his wife Anne, daughter of Ambrose Carter (q.v.) of Barking Lodge and his first wife Susanna Julia Raffles.

  2. William James Lindsay married Mary Anne Clarke 08/03/1834 in St Pancras, London. They had six children: Mary Anne Susan (born 1834/35 Pimlico, married George Ernest Augustus Ross 29/05/1858, died 14/10/1868 Wandsworth); William Robert George (born 1836 Pimlico); Mary Charlotte Maria (born 1841 Lambeth, married William Ware 27/12/1879, died November 1889); Frances (Fanny) Harriet (born 1844, died of pneumonia 23/11/1846 in Clapham); John Travers (born 1845, died of pneumonia 26/11/1846 in Clapham); William Maitland (born 04/10/1845 Pimlico, married Phyllis Grace Jeans 07/09/1869, drowned at sea off Hastings, a fishing boat accident, 12/10/1880).

  3. In 1841 William James and Mary Anne Lindsay were living at South Lambeth Road, London, with children Mary Anne Susan (age 6), William R. G. (age 4) and Mary Charlotte Maria (age 3 months). In 1851 William J. Lindsay, aged 48, merchant's clerk, born Jamaica was living at 42 Smith Street, Chelsea with wife Mary Ann aged 1841 born Middlesex and children Mary Anne (age 17, born Pimlico), William R. G. (age 5, born Pimlico), Mary Maria C. (age 11, born South Lambeth) and William M. (age 6 months, born Chelsea). By 1871 he was at 75 Charlwood Street 'West India merchant' aged 66 with his widowed sister Isabella Kendrick aged 50 born Middlesex and his son and the latter's family.

  4. William James Lindsay of 56 Coleshill Street, Pimlico, was executor for his grandfather's second wife Leonora Sophia Carter (q.v.).

  5. Will of William James Lindsay formerly of 75 Charlwood Street Pimlico afterwards of 7 Verulam Place Hastings but late of 15 Edith Villas West Kensington who died 29/05/1881 was proved 21/07/1881 by Thomas Broadbent Cartwright solicitor and William Ware, personal estate £13,121 7s 5d [William James Lindsay and Thomas Broadbent Cartwright had been the executors of Henry Morris Kemshead in 1879].

  6. William James Lindsay bought a grave in Kensal Green Cemetery, London, for his sister Susan, who had died at Hanwell Pauper Asylum 06/06/1845 when he gave his address as 10 Lower Grosvenor Place, Middlesex, which was the address of his wife Mary Anne's parents Charles Edward and Susanna (nee Skinner) Clarke. Later buried in the grave with Susan were: two infant children of his daughter Mary Anne Susan Ross; his wife Mary Anne Lindsay (nee Clarke); William James Lindsay himself; and his daughter Mary Charlotte Maria Ware. William James's two infant children – Fanny Harriet and John Travers – are buried in graves nearby, with members of his wife's (Clarke) family.
