Biography

Major Charles Schaw, son of Frances Newton Jarrett (1766-1837) and her first husband Charles Schaw (died 1794) of Schawfield. Probably the Charles Schaw shown as co-owner of Schawfield 1800-1811.

  1.  Born Jamaica 10/10/1785. Educated Eton, a soldier who fought in the Peninsular Wars, married Anne or Anna Frances Cockburn in Jamaica June 1815. They and their children migrated to Tasmania in 1833 when he was appointed a police magistrate. Returned to England c. 1858, died Torquay 05/03/1874, leaving £800. Among their children, Maria Susan Schaw (1820–1914) moved from Tasmania to Western Australia with her husband (Edward William Burchell Butcher [1826-1895]) and their two children in 1876. She died there aged about 94.

Probably the Charles Schaw shown as co-owner, with Edward Schaw, of the Schawfield estate in Trelawny between 1800 and 1811. Charles Schaw the son of Charles Schaw of Schawfield (d. c. 1974, will proved in London 1796) certainly inherited half the estate under his father's will.
