1783 - 4th Aug 1863

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Claimed unsuccessfully from Sheerness Kent as wife of Edward Warner under marriage settlement, annuitant of £1000 p.a., for the compensation for the enslaved people on Hatton Garden in Dominica. Her husband was Colonel Edward Warner (q.v.), and they were the grandparents of Pelham Francis Warner, the cricketer and writer on cricket.

  1. In 1851 a Catherine Warner annuitant aged 64 widow born Barbados was living at 18 Pelham Road with daughter Mary Reed aged 34 born Trinidad and sister-in-law Jane Warner aged '42' born St Vincent (this Jane Warner logically is the same woman as Jane Heming Warner (q.v.), another claimant on Hatton Garden, but there is a problem with her date of birth in the 1851 census). Catherine Jane Warner of 13 Stanhope Street, died 04/08/1863 age 80 or 81 and was buried in St Pancras 11/08/1863.

  2. Catherine Jane Shipley was one of three daughters of Sir Charles Shipley, who has an entry in the ODNB as 'army officer and colonial governor', which notes only the marriage of one of Shipley's three daughters, that of Elizabeth Cole to the 12th Earl of Buchan. Shipley was based in Antigua 1788-1792 and owned enslaved people there: he died in Grenada in 1815. Catharine Jane Mathew Shipley, daughter of Charles Shipley and Mary, was baptised at St Michael, Barbados, 14/03/1784.

  3. Catherine's daughter Mary (full name Hislope Mary Augusta) married James Sutherland Reed at Dover 05/11/1846.
