1757 - 1834
Slave-owner in Barbados from at least 1817.
Angel Price, daughter of William and Mary Price, was baptised in Christ Church, Barbados, 24/04/1758. She married Henry Chase 18/12/1783 in Christ Church. They had two sons, also baptised in Christ Church, William (24/01/1786) and Henry (08/01/1788). Henry had presumably died by the time Angel married John Kirton Anderson in Christ Church, 10/03/1799. Caribbeana Vol. I gives Angel Kirton-Anderson nee Price as widow of [blank] Maloney but no such marriage has been found.
John Kirton Anderson had previously had five children with an enslaved woman named Sukey or Susanna Hunt. He manumitted Sukey and transferred to her ownership of their five children and four other enslaved people before leaving Barbados for Scotland with his new wife Angel and his son with Sukey, a boy named John. Sukey subsequently died, leaving all her property, including ownership of her children, to John Kirton Anderson.
Anderson was in Glasgow, Scotland, when he signed a deed to manumit all five of his children with Sukey - John, Ann, Barbara, Mary and Sarah - in 1799. Anderson and his wife subsequently moved to England and were living at Albion place, Walworth, when Anderson signed his will in 1815, leaving all his property to his wife. John Kirton Anderson was buried at Newington St Mary, London, in 1816 aged 58.
Angel Kirton Anderson returned to Barbados where she was living at the time of the 1817 slave register. In 1818, allegations were made that Sukey's will was not legally binding and therefore that John Kirton Anderson's manumission of John, Ann, Barbara, Mary and Sarah was not valid. Angel Kirton Anderson petitioned the Prince Regent with two of her remaining step-daughters to guarantee their status as free people. By the time of the 1832 register she was described as an invalid. Angel Kirton Anderson of Bridgetown was buried in Christ Church, 11/09/1834 aged 78.
