His connection with both the estates flowed from his wife Sophia Sarah nee Howell, the daughter of John Howell of Prinknash (q.v.). Shelton's claimed share of Longville was mortgaged to Joseph Brooks Yates, who was awarded 1/3 of the compensation; the compensation for the enslaved people on Dover was also paid to Yates.
