1st Nov 1700 - 1757
Eldest son of Charles Long of Longville, Jamaica (1679-1723).
Father of the historian Edward Long. By Long's account, on the marriage of Samuel and Mary Tate, the marriage settlement involved a guarantee of £300 per annum to Mary if she should survive Samuel, charged on Longville estate (part of Seven Plantations, Clarendon) and a moity of Lucky Valley. The jointure was defended against the incumbrances which at the time affected Samuel's estates, namely (1) An annuity of £600 per annum to his stepmother Jane Modyford (2) several legacies and portions thereby bequeathed to younger children, amounting to £7000 (3) A mortgage contracted by Charles Long of the premises to John Carver, George Turbill and Stanton Thompson of the Middle Temple, Esquires, of £4000 and interest (4) against all other debts owing by the said Charles Long at his death.
Samuel Long was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 6755 acres of land in Clarendon.
Will of Samuel Long of Tredudwell [made in 1745] proved 10/02/1758. He left his wife an annuity of £400 p.a. secured on his Jamaica estates [and enslaved people] and the use of the house at Tredudwell for life, then to his son Robert. He left Robert £2000 and his other five children £1000 each, with additional sums of £1000 and £500 each respectively five years after the death of his [the testator's] wife. He left the estates themselves in entail to his son Robert for life then his heirs; then his son Charles and his heirs; and then to Edward and his heirs, then to his daughters and their heirs as tenants-in-common.

By the account of Samuel Long's son Edward Long, "I am not perfectly certain by what means [Samuel Long] became possessed only of one half of that Estate, and my uncle Charles [Long, 1705-1778] the other; but in that it may have hapned in virtue of some settlement made at the time of [Samuel's father Charles's] intermarriage with Lady Modyford, when he might probably have granted that other moiety to the first son or male issue of that marriage." |
