Mary Lawrence

???? - 1824

Biography

Resident slave-owner, dying in 1824.

  1. Daughter of George Brissett and Sarah Tharp. She married James Lawrence of Hazelymph, with whom she had nine children, including James Charles Lawrence and John Tharp(e) Lawrence.

  2. Another son, William Hudson Lawrence, disappeared from official view until re-emerging in 1881 in Charlcombe, near Bath, aged 88. The census describes him as "head of household, Captain Royal Artillery on half-pay, born Jamaica, British citizen." He died in 1884, aged 91.

  3. Another son, Richard Brissett Lawrence, was baptised in 1791 and matriculated Balliol College, Oxford, in 1813. As Rev. Richard Brissett Lawrence he registered one enslaved man in St James in 1817.

  4. A daughter, Emily/Amelia Lawrence, was baptised 1784, and married Frederick Burt Zincke in 1811.She was living in Bedford, England with her sister Sarah and her daughter Mary in 1841 and with her sister Sarah in 1851. Zincke became the owner of Endeavour estate and died after Emancipation. Emily/Amelia Zincke died in or near Bedford in 1858.

  5. Two further daughters, Sarah Brissett Lawrence and Mary Brissett Lawrence, were baptised in 1779 and 1780 respectively. Both were slave-owners who registered enslaved people in Hanover between 1817 and 1832 (or else Frederick B. Zincke or John Campbell did so as their attorneys). By 1832, Sarah Brissett Lawrence held 11 enslaved people, and Mary Brissett Lawrence 7 enslaved people. The latter is likely the Mary B. Lawrence who successfully claimed for the loss of six enslaved people in Hanover (Hanover Claim 461).

  6. Mary Lawrence, white, aged 67 years, bur. 7/30/1824 Hanover by Revd. B. H. Heath, rector. Res Endeavour.
