Biography

Resident slave-owner in British Guiana, brother of Edward Carlton Whitlock (q.v.) and partner with Walter Urquhart.

  1. In the will of Hubert Whitlock proved 01/12/1838 he identifies the estate bought jointly with Walter Urquhart at vendue in 1830 as 'Pln de Kinderen situated on the east bank of Mahaica Creek in this colony'. Hubert Whitlock said that he felt 'duty bound' to leave the estate and the enslaved people on it to 'the coloured woman Maria Sheppherd and her children Maria, Rebecca, and Sarah and Barbara (twins) and to Mary and Jane my children by the black woman Clarissa Styles.'

  2. In 1851, Hubert Whitlock's widow Emily aged 35 'gentlewoman, lady' born Bengal was living at 2 Park Place St Sidwell Exeter with her son Hubert C Whitlock medical student aged 17 born Demerara, and a visitor and one servant.
