Biography

  1. Daughter of Theodore Faulks and his wife Mary, baptised 02/07/1778 in Clarendon, Jamaica. Inherited a share in Mullet Hall and Amity estates in Clarendon, Jamaica, from her father, whose will was proved in 1811. In the census of 1841 she is recorded at 18 Caledonia Place, Clifton, Gloucestershire, age 60, of independent means, born West Indies, with her sister Ann, 3 female servants and her nephew Arthur Foulks. In the census of 1851 at 7 Chapel Row, Clifton, with 2 servants. Burial of Mary Burbury Foulkes age 80, 23/01/1858 at Redland, Clifton, Gloucestershire.

  2. The will of Mary Burbury Foulks, late of 7 Chapel Row, Hotwells, in the parish of Clifton spinster deceased who died 18 January 1858 at Chapel Row was proved at Bristol by the oath of John Beames Burroughs of 9 West Mall Clifton surgeon the sole executor. Effects under £1000.

  3. Ann Morgan Foulks, Mary Burbury Foulkes, Sarah Foulkes spinster sisters leased their enslaved people to their brother Arthur in 1807, along with their niece Elizabeth. Arthur to have the benefit at The Lodge, parish of St Dorothy, County Middlesex Jamaica. He to have the benefit of any increase - births - and to make up any deficiencies caused by death to the women. The legal document lists the names of the enslaved people owned by each of the women and their value. All the family are listed as of Brokenhurst, in the New Forest, outside Southampton.
