Biography

Of London, owner of Woodford estate on Grenada and of Garden estate in Trinidad, and father of George Armstrong and Archibald Armstrong jun. (each of whom q.v.).

  1. Will of Archibald Armstrong of the City of London [the probate gives formerly of the Island of Grenada, afterwards of Clifton but late of Montagu Place, Russell Square] proved 15/11/1823. He left monetary legacies totalling £27,000 among his children.

Archibald Armstrong of the City of London.

To my son Archibald Armstrong my estate called Woodford and all the slaves, stock etc upon it on the condition that he pays the following legacies: to each of my daughters Susan, Mary, Haryet, Louisa and Sarah, £3400 stirling each. £30 a year to my son Joseph Armstrong [probably a natural son].

In trust to my son Archd. [?Richd.], my nephew John Armstrong and my friend John Hoyes, all my property in Trinidad to pay for the following legacies: to Henry Armstrong, £1000, to William, Thomas and Edward Armstrong, £3000 each.

To my wife Rebecca Armstrong £200 stirling with all my household furniture etc.

The remainder to be divided equally between my children Susan, Mary, Haryet, Henry, Louisa, Sarah, William, Thomas and Edward Armstrong and Rebecca Armstrong.

My executors to be Archibald Armstrong, John Armstrong and John Hoyes of Grenada and Edward Ellice, Richard Parcell and James Jones of the City of London.

Signed 10/05/1823. My son George having in his lifetime received a full proportion of what he was entitled to at my death is the reason I do not mention him.

Appeared personally William Healing[?] of Lawrence Lane, London, Gen[?] Herman and George Kinnear of Freemasons Court Cornhill London to ratify the signature of Archibald Armstrong, signed 12/11/1823.

Proved in London 15/11/1823 by the oath of Archibald Armstrong Esquire the son.
