Biography

  1. Apparently born c. 1783, probably in Scotland.

  2. Father of Thomas Begg junior (q.v.), whose death certificate from 1883 gives his birth c. 1811 and parents are given as Thomas Begg, West India merchant, deceased, and Maria Julia Begg nee Fauchat, deceased. Thomas Begg junior was born in Grenada. Reports of a family bible owned by his grandson Samuel Begg junior gives another son of Thomas as Samuel Begg senior, born in Grenada in 1813. Also reported to be the father of John Begg. The same source gives his wife (or the mother of his children) as Maria Juia Paterson, born in Grenada.

  3. Samuel Begg, merchant, age 31, of Grenada, left Turks Islands on the Brig Francis and arrived at Philadelphia, 01/09/1846. In 1851 he was living at 18 Lloyd Square, Clerkenwell, age 37, born West Indies, with his wife Agnes W and daughter Mary W., age 7 (born Clerkenwell).

  4. Samuel Begg and John Begg were both freehold landowners in Napier, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand in 1870. Samuel was an insurance agent and moved to New Zealand c. 1860. He was married 35 years to Agnes Warrand Wilson, three sons and six daughters. He died 20/03/1879 age 66 and was buried at Old Napier Cemetery.
