1720 - 27th Oct 1809
Philip Dehany (c. 1720-1809), owner of the Point and Barbican [and possibly Paradise] sugar estates and the enslaved people on them in Hanover, was the son of David Dehany, merchant of Bristol and planter of Jamaica and Mary, daughter of Matthew Gregory. He married Margaret Salter Hooper (who inherited Salter's plantation and the enslaved people upon it in Barbados from her aunt Margaret Salter in 1803) and had a daughter - Mary Salter Dehany (q.v.) - who was born c. 1740 in Jamaica and died 1832 at Hayes Place, Kent. Philip Dehany himself has addresses attributed to him 1767/1787 at Farleigh Wallop, Hampshire, England; after 1770 at Kempshott Manor, Hampshire (which he built); and at 1809 in Seymour Street, Portman Square, London, England. He was a founder member of the MCC and third owner of Hayes Place, Kent. (The first owner was the first Lord Chatham.) Philip Dehany was also MP for St Ives, 1778-1780.
