Biography

MP for Great Grimsby 1807-1812. Son of Alexander Ellice of Mark Lane (q.v.) and under his father's will assigned [unspecified] estates in Demerary valued by his father at £50,000 on condition that he give up his share in the 'house in Mark Lane', i.e. the mercantile firm of Phyn, Ellice. The estates in Demerary have not yet been identified, but W. Ellice was shown as the owner of Kitty estate in 1817.

  1. The History of Parliament entry details his early career in Canada after which, '[r]eturning to England on his father's death, when he acquired his father's Caribbean assets, he was a partner in the family firm of Phyn, Ellice and Inglis, but overshadowed by his brother Edward.' The entry gives his date of death as 1822.
