John Geddes

1. Very likely the James Geddes, son of Andrew Geddes and his wife Katharine Duffus, baptised in Bellie, Moray, 15/10/1774 (based on the identification of his brother Andrew Geddes, q.v.).

2. Administration of the will of John Geddes of [Elgin estate] Manchester Jamaica was granted 03/01/1849 to Andrew Geddes of Elgin North Britain, the brother and only next of kin. Under the will [made in 1832] John Geddes left £120 to Elizabeth Ricketts 'a free Sambo woman' his present housekeeper, and all the rest and residue of his property on the island of Jamaica to his three reputed children with her, William, Andrew and Mary Geddes. In an affidavit in 1849 Andrew Geddes explained that he was entitled to the 'considerable sum of money' belonging to John Geddes 'in this country' not disposed under the latter's will. In 1852 a further grant of administration was made to the executors of Andrew Geddes of Elgin North Britain. In his own will Andrew Geddes of Elgin set out his claim on his brother's estate, including a sum of £625 14s 2d that had been held in an account in the name of James Stevenson [executor of John Geddes] with Messrs A. Stewart and Westmorland.
