Biography

Brother of George Hibbert (q.v.). He left monetary legacies totalling £54,000 to his relatives as well as the Chalfont estate in Buckinghamshire to his brother Robert. He appears to have been the Thomas Hibbert jun. of Jamaica who was partner c. 1776 with Thomas Horton and John Purrier (each of whom q.v.).

Thomas Hibbert of Chalfont House, co. Bucks, Esq. Will dated 21 May 1814. To my wife Sophia Hibbert, my brothers Robert H., George H. and William H., my sisters Eliz. Markland, wife of Robert M., Esq., Mary Oates, widow of Mr George William Oates, late merchant, deceased, and Esther H., and my sister-in-1aw Mrs. Mary H., widow of my late brother Samuel H., £500 each. To my sisters-in-law Mrs. Letitia H., wife of my brother Robert H., and Mrs. Eliz. Margaret H., wife of my brother George H., and my brothers-in-law Thomas Greg, Esq., Robert Markland, Esq., and Major-Gen. John Prince £100 each. To my wife for life my copyhold of late a. called Holcomb in the manor of Westcott, co. Surrey. To the children of my brother George H. £16,000. To those of my brother William H. £10,000. Mrs. Mary H. £1000. My nephew Sam. H., son of my brother Sam. H., £2,500. My niece, dau. of my late brother Sam. H., £2,500. To the children of Eliz. Markland £5000. My nephew John Prince, only child of my late sister Ann £5000. To the children of Mary Oates £4000, and to her an annuity of £300, and power for her by will to charge my estate with £6000 in favour of her children and grandchildren. My sister Esther H. £3000. 5 years for payment of legacies and 5 per cent. interest. My mansion of Chalfont House in the parish of Chalfont St. Peter, plate, furniture, pictures, books and lands in that parish and in the parish of Chalfont St. Giles, and Iver, to my brother Robert H., he applying to my estate £25,000, part thereof to be added to the fund, out of which my wife's annuity of £1600 is payable after my death. All residue of estate to the said Robert H., George H. and W. H. and Ex'ors.

1st Codicil. 12 Sept. 1817. To Mrs. H. her portrait by Gainsborough, annuities to servants.

2nd Codicil. 27 July 1818. Revoke legacy to my nephew John Prince, his death leaving no issue but his widow. Mrs. Anne Penelope P. has had a dau. born since. £2000 to the said dau. at 21. Testator died 25 May 1819. Proved 30 Aug. 1819. (60, Ellenborough.)

Shown as registered for Hibberts Fuhr and Purrier in 1817, after a purchase in Chancery by James Simpson for 'Thomas Hibbert' in trust, and sold by the firm by 1820. The purchase in Chancery presumably flowed from an earlier mortgage.
