Elizabeth Dottin (née Rous)

Biography

Daughter of Samuel Rous (?-1784), owner of the Clifton Hall estate, St John, Barbados. Acquired the estate in 1787 and owned it until her death in England in 1806. (The estate was subsequently sold in Chancery in 1810 to Robert Haynes: see entry for the estate.) Wife of Abel Dottin II and mother of Abel Rous Dottin (both of whom q.v.).

  1. Will of Elizabeth Rous of St John Barbados proved 22/12/1806. In the will she left Clifton Hall to her son Abel Rous Dottin on condition he adopted the name and arms of her father Samuel Rous, and then to Abel Rous Dottin's second son. After monetary legacies totalling more than £3000 she left her residual estate also to Abel Rous Dottin, having made provision to free a number of enslaved people (Rogetta Rodivar [?] John Parris Abel and Philida, possibly 6 in total) two years after her death, they to live unmolested on the estate.
