Elder son of James Irving II and his wife Mary James nee O'Connor, daughter of Philip O'Connor of Carrickfoyle, Jamaica. Born in Jamaica in 1792. His father died in 1798. Attended Westminster School and Exeter College, Oxford. Married Judith Bowen Nasmyth, co-heiress of Dr Thomas Nasmyth of Rhodes Hall, Jamaica, in Marylebone, London, 29/05.1819. Living at 14 Harley Street in 1821. Spent most of his life in England with long trips to the Continent. Two sons, James (1822-1856) and Robert Nasmyth (1827-). Died at Leghorn, 10/02/1857.

The will of James Irving of Leghorn Tuscany proved 10/10/1856 PROB 11/2240/132 was that of the son of James Irving III, who predeceased him. The other son of James Irving III, Robert Nasmyth Irving, died in London at 20 Onslow Gardens 08/03/1894 leaving £18,698. He had inherited the Bonshaw estate in Scotland 'but wasted most of his life away from Bonshaw, leaving it heavily mortgaged; he died in 1894, unmarried and with substantial debts. It is he who is regarded by Colonel J.B.
