Biography

Bristol merchant, with diverse interests including wool trading and distilling, and former slave-trader, co-owner of the Bedminster and Eden estates on Dominica until the mid-1820s with Thomas Powell, probably his brother Thomas Hungerford Powell.

  1. Will of Joshua Powell of Bristol and the parish of Brislington proved 30/10/1834. In his will he said he had advanced £10,000 to each of his three daughters in anticipation of their marrying, and he left the rest of his property in trust to raise £10,000 for each of his two sons Joshua and Timothy Powell. The will identified his brother as Thomas Hungerford Powell. Joshua Powell's grandson Walter Rice Howell Powell (1819-1889) was MP for Carmathenshire 1880-1885 and then West Carmathenshire 1885-1889.
