Married to Jane Rutherford, daughter of John Rutherford of Sue River and his wife Jane, whom he married in St George, Jamaica, 15/08/1817. One daughter, Jane Laurie Bell, baptised in Crossmichael, Kirkudbright, Scotland, 1832 when the parents were 'of Hillowton'. Described as 'of Hillowtown, Galloway' in the will of his mother-in-law Jane Rutherford in 1834. Living at Hollolton[?] House, Crossmichael, in the census of 1841, age 55, 'Independent', born in Scotland, with Jane age 40, not born in Scotland, Jane age 9, born in Kircudbrightshire, a male servant, a governess and three female servants. At the same address in 1851, age 68, 'Proprietor of Land and J.P. (farming 200 acres emp. 10 lab.)', born Ayrshire, Jane age 52 born in England, Jane L. age 19, and servants.

Jane was at Hillowton Mansion House in 1861, a widow, with 2 male and 3 female servants. She was at Hillowton House, age 72, 'Landowner' in 1871 with her son John, age 51, 'Landowner', born Jamaica, daughter-in-law Jane W., age 34, grandsons Allan R., Francis, Stuart and James McK. and servants. She was still at Hillowton in 1881, age 82, 'Annuitant', born London, with her son John, married, age 61, a farmer of 235 acres, born Jamaica, grand-daughter Jane, age 44, born Edinburgh and 4 female servants.

Jane died at Hillowton 10/12/1884, her parents' names given as John Rutherford (Jamaican planter) and Jane Rutherford (M.S. McGuffog).
