George Stovin Wardale

1781 - 1829

Biography

  1. George Stovin Wardale was baptised 22/05/1781 in Holy Trinity, Hull, East Yorkshire; father George Wardale, mother not named.
  2. In Jamaica, George Stovin Wardale married Ann Laing Harriott, daughter of James Harriott and Catherine Laing; she had married William Bradford in 1798 and was soon widowed before she went on to marry George Stovin Wardale. He had two children: George Harriott Wardale, baptised Kingston 1807, parents not named; and Francis Wardale, baptised Kingston 1816, father George Stovin Wardale, mother Ann Laing Bradford.
  3. George Stovin Wardale registered enslaved people in St John, St Andrew, and Manchester from 1817 to 1829. The earliest record in the Jamaica Almanac is based on returns for 1816 in St John, which suggests that this is roughly when he became a proprietor and slave-owner. The scale and pattern of the returns indicate that he mainly operated livestock pens. 4.. He died between 1829 and 1832. In 1832 his executor recorded ‘returned by George Harriott Wardale, Heirship’ for most of the enslaved people George Stovin Wardale had owned.
