Biography

London merchant, born Jamaica c. 1807. Given as G.H. Wardale in the Parliamentary Papers and as G. Harriott Wardale in the Register of Claims. Baptised Kingston, Jamaica 1807; parents not named, though George Stovin Wardale and Ann Laing Harriott [after corrections] were the parents of Francis Wardale in Kingston in 1816. After the death of his father he inherited enslaved people in Jamaica between 1829 and 1832. He married Eliza Tourner in Bromley in 1829, and has been located in all Censuses from 1841 to 1871.

  1. 1871 census shows George Harriott Wardale 'Chief Clerk in a manufactory' aged 64 born Jamaica living at 12 Stonebridge Villas Lewisham with his wife Eliza also aged 64 and two daughters Ann Eliza 23 and Lucy '10' [sic: either she was older or she was a grand-daughter]; death of George Harriott Wardale aged 71 registered Q1 1878 Lewisham; will of George Harriott Wardale late of 12 Stonebridge Villas proved 23/03/1878, effects under £2000.  Geo. Harriott Wardale & co., Italian warehousemen 15 Garlick Hill.

  2. A group of enslaved people were registered by George Harriott in 1832 as executor of George Steven [or Stovin] Wardale: for a number of those on the list a note says 'Returned by George Harriott Wardale... By heirship.'
