George White Thomas

1750 - 1821

Biography

MP for Chichester 1784-1812. Son of John White of Montserrat, St Kitts and Chichester, and Lydia, daughter of Sir George Thomas 1st bart (q.v.). Took the name of Thomas in 1778 on inheriting Yapton from his maternal grandfather Sir George Thomas 1st bart. (his uncle Sir William Thomas 2nd bart. had died in Dec. 1777).

  1. Will of George Thomas of Watergate House Sussex proved 24/12/1821. In the will he left his personal and real estate, including Watergate House which he had inherited from his late wife Frances, in trust for his daughter Frances and her husband John Gustavus Crosbie. The will is silent on West India property or enslaved people: under his father's will he had been tenant-for-life of an estate or estate almost certainly including White's in St Kitts, which was shown as the property of his son-in-law Sir John Gustavus Crosbie from 1822 onwards.
