Biography

  1. Thomas Cussans, son of Thomas of the isle of Jamaica, matriculated 29/05/1755 aged 16. John, almost certainly his brother, also son of Thomas of Jamaica, matriculated 05/01/1759 aged 17.

  2. Thomas Cussans contributed £30 to the University of Pennsylvania following Dr John Morgan's fundraising tour of the West Indies in 1772-1773.

  3. Will of Thomas Cussans of [Stanhope Street] Mayfair proved 05/08/1796. In the will he left his wife Catherine an annuity of £1500 p.a., replacing the annuity of £1000 p.a. in their marriage settlement, in each case secured on the Winchester estate and Hopewell Pen, and the enslaved people upon them: after 18 months from his death, £400 p.a of this £1500 p.a was to be charged on his leasehold house in Stanhope Street. He left his nephew George Cussans Richards of Lincolns inn. an annuity of £400 p.a., his nephew John (the son of his deceased brother John) an annuity of £70 p.a. and his godson Thomas Dakers (son of Sophia King now residing in France) an annuity of £50 p.a., all charged on Winchester and Hopewell. He was, he said entitled to charge one moiety of Amity Hall with £5000, which he did in trust for his nieces Jemima Cussans and Euphine Scott. He left Winchester and Hopewell Hall [sic] subject to these annuities and other monetary legacies to his niece Catherine Lambert. In a codicil of 1796 he said that he and his nephew Thomas Cussans [III] (q.v.), identified in the main body of the will as the eldest son of his brother John, had entered into an agreement to bar the entail on Amity Hall.
