Biography

Returnee from Jamaica and MP for Plymouth 1754-1760. From a Devon wool-trading family. Builder of the first bridge across the Thames at Walton in Surrey, which he left with his Jamaica estates to his great-nephew Michael Dicker Sanders (q.v.). He left his wife Elizabeth an annuity of £600 p.a. It is not clear how his Jamaica inventory, which showed 13 enslaved people, is consistent with his ownership of the estate of Morgan's Valley.

Samuel Dicker of Britain, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1762. Slave-ownership at probate: 13 of whom 8 were listed as male and 5 as female. 2 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £58826.54 Jamaican currency of which £695 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £56288.54 currency debts and £0 currency plate.
