Grandson of William Porterfield who he succeeded in 1690 at the age of 17, his father having died previously. Inherited a share in Grandvale estate in Jamaica through his second wife Margaret Campbell in 1735, 'and with her fortune purchased the estate of Blacksolme [in Renfreshire, Scotland] about 1735' Died 14/05/1743. Margaret's main heir was Alexander Porterfield's grandson Boyd Porterfield, the son of Alexander Porterfield the younger, who was the second son of Alexander Porterfield the elder by his first wife Lady Catherine Boyd.
