Mary Dehany (née Gregory)

???? - 1813

Biography

Widow of George Dehany I (d. c. 1767) and mother of George Dehany II, Lucretia Mary Welch and Elizabeth Pinnock (each of whom q.v.). Shown by Vere Langford Oliver as daughter of Mathew and Lucretia Gregory. In her will she talked of the disposal of an estate called Swansea, which was almost certainly Swansea in St John, shown as belonging to Mathew Gregory in 1741.

  1. Will of Mary Dehany of Devonshire Street, Portland Place [made in 1802] proved 20/08/1813. In the will she said that she had already given to her son George his fourth share of the principal money raised from the sale of Swansea plantation in Jamaica, which otherwise he would have been entitled to on her death, and she instructed that the other 3/4ths part be paid out of her estate at her death to the people entitled to it [basically, her three daughters and their descendants]. After monetary legacies of 100 guineas to her son George and and of 20-50 guineas each to about a dozen grandchildren, she left one half of her residual estate to her daughter Lucretia Mary Welch [her sole executrix] and the other half to another daughter Elizabeth Pinnock. In a Memorandum dated 1808 she reiterated that George had received his share, but that she had laid out the other 3/4ths of the proceeds of the sale of the Swansea estate in £8500 4% consols. for the benefit of her other three children.
