A. M. Meertens

Biography

'A.M Meertens' was shown as the owner in 1817 of two estates (Elizabeth and Strick en Heuvel) that do not appear again in the Slave Registers, and of La Retraite in 1832 when A.M. Meertens was said to be in extreme debility. LBS has not fully unpicked the Meertens family, but Anthony and Johanna Meertens (each of whom q.v.) had a son named Anthony Mangelaar Meertens who was of age to be one of his father's executors in 1815.

  1. The Anthony Mangelaar Meertens of Demerara, born 1816, who enrolled in law at Utrecht University in 1834 age 20 [sic], at Leyden in 1836 and graduated a doctor of law in Leyden in 1842, was too young to have been the A.M. Meertens of the 1817 and 1832 Slave Registers.
