Younger son of James 6th Lord Cranstoun (q.v.) and Sophia Lady Cranstoun nee Browne (q.v.). He succeeded his brother William in 1778. He has an entry in the ODNB as 'naval officer' that makes no reference to the his slave-ownership or that of his mother's family.
