Biography

Slave-owner on Antigua, dying in London in 1810. Daughter and co-heiress of of Stephen Blizard (q.v.), married first William Warner of Antigua and then in 1775 Martin Byam of Antigua.

  1. Will of Elizabeth Byam widow of [Camden Street] Camden Town proved 28/06/1810. She said the under the will of her father she was entitled to 1/5th share in his real estate on Antigua and to £10,000 currency then secured on the estate of Martin Byam her late husband. She left the share in the real estate to her niece Jane Young, wife of John Young of Bath, for life and after her death then to pay an annuity of £100 p.a. to John Young, and subject to that annuity then to Sarah Nibbs wife of James Nibbs of Upton House in the county of Southampton, then to her nephew Andrew Lessly of Kuisale [Kinsale?] Ireland and then to Jane, wife of Thomas Norbury Kerby, and her heirs. She divided the £10,000 currency between Jane Young (£4000); the Hon Edward Byam (£500); Jane Kerby (£1000); her great-niece Ann Byam Kerby (£500); Sarah Nibbs (£1000); Andrew Lessly (£1000); her serving woman Isabella Margrave (£300); and each of her executors £500 each. She was entitled to a further £8000 currency under her two marriage settlements, and she left £2000 of this to Mary Hutchinson the daughter of her late husband Martin Byam and £3000 in trust for her adopted daughter Mary Smelt [?], daughter of the late Cornelius Smelt [?] late Colonel in the Yorkshire militia and Mary Ottley. She left further monetary legacies including to £400 to Samuel Byam of Antigua (not further identified in the will but q.v. under Samuel Byam d. c. 1818) and £800 to Elizabeth Muller, daughter of her late husband Martin Byam. In a codicil of she left specified personal possessions among a similar group of legatees.
