Biography

The estate of John Basnett was listed in the Jamaican Quit Rent books for 1754 as the owner of 890 acres of land in St Mary.

John Basnett of St Mary, Esquire. Estate probated in Jamaica in 1746. Slave-ownership at probate: 111 of whom 63 were listed as male and 48 as female. 20 were listed as boys, girls or children. Total value of estate at probate: £7885.71 Jamaican currency of which £4335 currency was the value of enslaved people. Estate valuation included £0 currency cash, £26.44 currency debts and £6.6 currency plate.

No PCC will has been found for John Basnett. He is probably the younger son of Richard Basnett and his wife Rachel, and the brother of Richard Basnett the younger (all q.v.), mentioned in the will of his father.

The will of John Basnet was proved in Jamaica in 1745.
