James Lewis I

1. Owner of Lewisburgh estate in St Mary from at least 1785 until his death in 1800.

2. Memorial inscription in Westbury-upon-Trym, Gloucestershire gives James Lewis Esquire, late of Shirehampton formerly of the Island of Jamaica, died 20/06/1800 aged 81 years, "He died sincerely lamented by his friends and regreted by the poor, to whom he was a benefactor..." Obituary notice in Farley's Bristol Journal states: "Yesterday se-nnight d. at his house at Shirehampton, at a very advanced age, Jas Lewis senior, formerly of the Island of Jamaica." James Lewis was clerk to the Assembly 1761 and 1794, Member of Assembly for St Catherine 1766, 1768, 1770, 1781. James Lewis and his wife Sarah had three children baptised in St Catherine: James (born and baptised 1756), Thomas (baptised 1762) and Charles Dove (baptised 1766).
