Biography

Joint owner with Joseph W. Mayer of Rose Bank estate in St Vincent which was in the hands of receivers by the time of compensation. Charles Shephard showed the owners c. 1831 as 'Devisees of George Dalzell and Joseph W Mayer deceased.' LBS has not yet traced George Dalzell's death-date (genealogical material online suggests that a John George Dalzell (1741-1829) had married Sarah Mayer in 1785, but the date of death given in such trees for this John George Dalzell is frequently that of Hon. John Dalzell (q.v.), a man of a younger generation). Sarah Mayer was shown as a sister of Joseph Wickham Mayer by Vere Langford Oliver.

  1. In 1822, the Slave Register entry for Rose Bank shows an enslaved man named 'Bob Smith' aged 22, 'Domestic', described as 'Mongrel' [sic] under 'Colour', 'Went to London with Mr Dalzell'.

  2. George Dalzell of Upper Charlotte Street was party to a deed of 21/06/1798 under which he conveyed 60 acres of land adjacent to Rose Bank to John Browne of Lothbury, and party to a further indenture of 22/06/1798 of five parts between him and his wife Sarah, given as of Upper Charlotte Street, Joseph W Mayer of Upper Charlotte Street, John Anthony Rucker and others concerning a mortgage of a larger estate with 77 enslaved people to Rucker originally made in 1793.
