Son of John Mayer senior and brother of John Wickham Mayer (both of whom q.v.). Vere Langford Oliver shows Joseph W. Mayer in 1788 for Mayer's, from Lussman's map, although Joseph Wickham Mayer was likely a minor at the time. He was co-owner with George Dalzell of Rose Bank on St Vincent.

In 1821 Ann Edge Mayer applied for a pension as widow of Joseph Wickham Mayer, who had died at Bombay 23/02/1821. The application gave their marriage date as 25/02/1819.
