Biography

  1. Priscilla Prance "free mulatto", baptised in St Elizabeth 27/10/1794 with her son Patrick Carnegie. Aged about 20 years at the time of her baptism. Ceconia Carnegy, about 12 years old, reputed daughter of Dr Stewart Carnegy, deceased, by Priscilla Prance, "a free mulatto", baptised in St Elizabeth 06/07/1809. Ruth Prance Carnegie, aged about 10 years, John Stewart Carnegie, aged about 8 years and Maria Antoinette Carnegie, aged about 6 years, reputed children of Dr Stewart Carnegie by Priscilla Prance, "a free mulatto", baptised in St Elizabeth 07/12/1810. Ophilia Carnagy, aged 80 years, wife of Patrick Carnagy, a labourer, was of New Market at her death, 04/12/1883.

  2. Stewart Carnegie was also reputed father, by Mary Wood, "free mulatto", of:

    . William Carnegie: born 14/04/1789; baptised 21/10/1781, whose son Stewart Carnegie, by his wife Lavinia [almost certainly the former Lavinia Cartwright: see entry for Andrew White senior, paras. 6 and 8], was baptised 03/12/1826, aged 2.5 years, described as quadroon, parents of Santa Cruz

    . Catherine Carnegie: born 22/07/179- [blank in register]; baptised 17/06/1795; owner of 12 enslaved people in St Elizabeth 1820 and 1821.

  3. Elizabeth Frances Carnegie, daughter of Mr Stewart Carnegie by Mary Powell, was born 07/04/1794 and bapt. in St Elizabeth 27/10/1794, “child reputed white” (on the same day of Priscilla Prance and Patrick Carnegie).

  4. Dr Stewart Carnegie, son of the late James Carnegie esq of Balmachie, died at Goshen, Jamaica, 28/12/1807. A family history gives him as the son of James Carnegie, 7th of Balmachie, "a surgeon in the Navy". Stewart, son of James Carnegie of Balmachie and his second wife Clementina Lyall was baptised in Panbride, Angus, Scotland, 21/01/1762.
