James Akers the elder

???? - 1791

Biography

Slave-owner of St Kitts and Nevis.

  1. By an indenture of 20/07/1792, Nicholas Richards, John Akers of St Kitts barrister-at-law and Isaac Dupuy Akers clerk (as trustees under an indenture of 11/05/1791 between James Akers of Great James Street, Bedford Row and Anne his wife, Henry Holt of Palgrave Place and Nicholas Richards, John Akers and Isaac Dupuy Akers) sold a small plantation on Nevis to Stedman Rawlins for £1000. James, John and Isaac Dupuy Akers were devisees and executors of their father James Akers late of St Kitts, who had purchased the estate from Edward Abbott, son of Richard Abbot[t], in 1775 for £1750. The earlier indenture of 11/05/1791 involved Anne Akers surrendering her right of dower in James Akers of Great James Street's share of inheritance from his father.

  2. James Akers the younger was a merchant in London. In 1817 a notice appeared advertising for creditors of James Akers merchant late of the Adelphi to meet with the Trustees for his creditors, implying his business had failed.
