Rev. John Campbell

1749 - 1813


Biography

  1. Rector of St Andrew, Jamaica. Succeeded as Rector by his son Rev. Alexander Campbell. Two children with his wife Christian (nee Houstoun) baptised in St Andrew: Catherine (1789) and Christian (1791).

  2. Died at Wimpole Street in 1813, age 64, having lived in Jamaica for upwards of 30 years.

  3. His death notice in the Hull Packet gives his age at death as 65 and states he was the brother of Mr D Campbell, "iron-founder of this town".

  4. Memorial inscription in St Cuthbert's, Edinburgh: "Here lie the remains of Mrs. Christian Campbell, widow of the Rev John Campbell, Rector of the Parish of St. Andrew, Jamaica, who died, 11th February 1835, aged 83 years." Numerous online family trees give her as Christian Houstoun, presmably the daughter of Andrew Houstoun the elder of Jordanhill [q.v.] and his wife Elizabeth Rae.

  5. Possibly the John Campbell, educated at the University of Edinburgh and ordained in St George's Bloomsbury 21/5/1780.
