Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Awarded the compensation for the enslaved people on Moreland, Marlboro and Cedar Grove in Manchester, and one small award, possibly on Wilton Pen, in St Elizabeth, as the 'beneficial owner' as heir to his uncle Richard Boucher.

  1. The Queen 'has been pleased to grant' James George Crabb of Shedfield, in the parish of Droxford, in the county of Wiltshire [sic], in compliance with the wish of his maternal uncle Richard Boucher, late of Marlborough Mount Jamaica, the right to use the surname Boucher in place of that of Crabb'.

  2. A notice for creditors of James George Boucher, formerly James George Crabb, of Shidfield [sic], in the parish of Droxford, Hampshire, who died on or around 11/6/1851, was published 1852. His will, made in 1850, was proved 21/07/1851. He had settled £10,000 on his 'present wife'; his son James George Crabb had inherited over £24,500 in consols from his [the testator's] father, and Crabb the testator insisted that he [Crabb the son] put £20,000 back into the 'hotchpotch' before sharing in the residuary estate with his siblings.

  3. Arabella Sarah Grove Boucher had married James Crabb at St Mary Woolnoth 17/11/1778. This couple were the parents of James George Crabb later Boucher.

  4. According to a local history site, James George Crabb founded the school at Shedfield in 1832, after he retired from the East India Naval Service and had been presented with Shedfield Lodge on his wedding, and his daughter founded the cottage hospital at Hill House in Shirrell Heath. The will of Alethea Boucher late of Shidfield in the county of Hampshire (the widow of James George Boucher né Crabb) was proved 20/11/1870 (she left under £600). In 1851 the couple had been living at Shidfield with daughter Elizabeth and son Alfred, aged 9 and 8.
