Biography

Awarded the compensation with his brother-in-law, the MP Richard Godson (q.v.) for the Pusey Hall estate in Vere Jamaica. Godson claimed that on his marriage (in 1825) he had 'been forced to take possession of a £50,000 mortgage' on an estate in Jamaica.

  1. Henry Hargreaves of Springfield Hall Lancaster died 27/11/1840 aged 37. His father James Hargreaves of Springfield died 15/06/1804 aged 52; his widow Mary died 1825. James was son of Henry Hargreaves (who died 1786).

  2. Henry Hargreaves, elder son of James Hargreaves, deceased, late of Springfield, was matriculated at Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1821, BA 1825, MA 1828. 'On Saturday last, Henry Hargreaves Esq. of Pembrooke Hall College, Cambridge (and Springfield near this town) was admitted to the degree of Batchelor of Arts.'

T71/858 Vere claim no. 42. Pusey Hall was shown against John Pusey Edwardes or 'heirs of John Pusey Edwardes' in the Jamaica Almanacs 1811-1826, then is not shown again until the 1838 almanac. However, 'Hargreaves and Godson' are shown in the 1831 (where it is transcribed as 'Hargreaves and Gordon'), 1832 and 1833 almanacs against an equivalent number of enslaved people. The will of John Pusey Edwards otherwise Edwardes of Green Street Grosvenor Square was proved 26/07/1822, PROB 11/1659.

London Gazette, Issue 15724, 31/07/1804, p. 929 includes an advertisement for 'all persons having any demand against the separate estate of James Hargreaves, late of Lancaster...banker.'
