Ann Bruce was baptised in Westmoreland, Jamaica, in 1796. Ann Bruce She registered enslaved people in Westmoreland: six people in 1817, rising to sixteen in 1832. She was a woman of colour and the extra-marital partner in Jamaica of George Kirlew (q.v.), whom she later married. The couple moved to England after the end of slavery. She was living with him in York in 1841 and 1851. After his death, she remained at The Mount in York where she was recorded in 1861 (widow, aged 64, annuitant, born Jamaica; with John Kirlew, brother-in-law, aged 85; and two servants) and 1871 (widow, aged 75, born Jamaica; with two servants). She died 14 May 1874, leaving around £5000.
